Golden hour is not an hour: what the term really means

TL;DR

Golden hour is not a fixed hour and has no official definition. On one stated band, from the moment the sun is 6° above the horizon until it is 4° below it, the evening light on 15 June 2026 lasts 50 minutes at Naha in Okinawa but 133 minutes at Helsinki. The further you are from the equator, the longer the low sun lingers.

Why do guides disagree about golden hour?

Because nobody defines it officially. The US Naval Observatory defines sunrise, sunset and civil, nautical and astronomical twilight by the sun's angle below the horizon, and says nothing about golden hour.2 The authors of the PhotoPills app, who give an angle for it, write: Magic hours are a more diffuse concept than twilights because there is no mathematical definition.3

They define golden hour as the sun between 6° above and 4° below the horizon, and blue hour as 4° to 6° below.3 Other guides define it as roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset.5 We use the angle band, because an angle gives the same light everywhere; a fixed hour does not.

Why does it last longer in the north?

Near the equator the sun sets steeply and crosses a band of sky quickly. Far from it, the sun slants down at a shallow angle and takes longer to cross the same band. Our figures for the 15th of June and December 2026 show it:1

Tokyo (Tokyo)35.7° N5657
Brussels (Belgium)50.8° N8084
Helsinki (Finland)60.2° N133166

What are civil, nautical and astronomical twilight?

  • Civil twilight ends when the centre of the sun is 6° below the horizon.2
  • Nautical twilight ends at 12° below.2
  • Astronomical twilight ends at 18° below; after that the sky is fully dark.2

Blue hour, on the band we use, is the last part of civil twilight.3 Where the sun never sinks 18° below the horizon, summer nights never get fully dark: see dark nights and the Milky Way.

What this page cannot tell you

  • The colour of the light. Weather decides it; the angle only sets the stage.
  • A single right answer. Our band is one convention among several, and we say which one we use.

Key takeaways

  • Golden hour has no official definition; guides use different ones.
  • On our band, evening golden light lasted 50 minutes at Naha and 133 at Helsinki on 15 June 2026.
  • Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight do have official definitions: 6°, 12° and 18° below the horizon.
  • What we would skip: any app or guide that gives golden hour without saying how it defines it.
