How we compared them

We took twelve pairs of places in the same country and compared the regions they sit in, using Eurostat's count of nights spent at hotels, holiday and short-stay accommodation and campsites in 2025.1 A big region has more visitors partly because it is big, so we also divided each region's nights by the number of people living there.2 Eurostat's own list of which municipality belongs to which region confirms where each place is.3

What these figures cannot tell you

  • Regions, not towns. Each figure covers a whole region, often with a large city in it. A quiet region can still have a crowded old town, and the other way round. For single towns, see Which town is quieter?
  • Nights, not visitors. Day trips and cruise passengers do not count, because they do not stay the night.4
  • One year. These are 2025 totals. The busiest month can be far busier than the average.
  • We have not been to these places and make no judgement about which is better.

Key takeaways

  • In all 12 pairs, the second place's region had fewer tourist nights than the first in 2025.
  • The biggest gap was North Holland against Utrecht: 8.7 times as many nights.
  • For its size, Basilicata had more tourist nights per resident than Campania.
  • What we would skip: reading a region's total as a verdict on a single town. Check the month too: see Off-season in Europe.
