Croatia is the most seasonal of 35 European countries, with 54.5% of its 2025 tourist nights in its two busiest months; Malta is the least, at 21.8%. In Japan the range runs from Yamanashi (27.1%) to Tokyo (17.8%). Five charts show lean seasons, daylight, weather and who visits side by side, and each can be saved or linked.
Every chart on this page is drawn from figures the site already publishes on its country, prefecture and light pages, and each one links back to them. When is each place quiet? The lean seasons at a glance
Each square is one month's share of the year's tourist nights in 2025. An average month would hold 8.3%, so blue squares are quieter than average and orange squares busier. Rows run from the most seasonal place to the least. In August, 0 of the 35 European countries had less than 9% of their year's nights.1

Colour bands are ours: under 4%, 4–6%, 6–7.5%, 7.5–9% (about average), 9–12%, 12–16% and 16% or more, applied to each share as rounded on the country and prefecture pages. Europe counts nights at hotels, holiday and short-stay accommodation and campsites; Japan counts guest nights at licensed hotels, ryokan and other lodgings. The two surveys differ, so compare months within a region.
Which places pack their year into two months?
This is the measure behind our off-season rankings: the share of 2025's nights that fell in each place's two busiest months. A long bar means a short, sharp high season; a short bar means visitors are spread across the year.12

How much daylight and golden light, month by month?
Choose up to three places. The first chart shows daylight from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month of 2026; the second shows evening golden light, which we define as the time from when the sun is 6° above the horizon until it is 4° below it. No official body defines golden hour, so that band is our stated convention.34

Key takeaways
- Most seasonal in Europe: Croatia, with 54.5% of 2025 nights in two months. Least: Malta, at 21.8%.
- Most seasonal in Japan: Yamanashi (27.1%). Least: Tokyo (17.8%).
- Blue squares on the heat map are the lean months: under 7.5% of the year.
- What we would skip: comparing a European square with a Japanese one. The two surveys count different things.
